Proper MMA training can be described as "the science of fighting", keeping in mind that "fighting" is a process of preventing or eliminating ANY type of conflict. Our MMA system (which has over 25 years of research and development) tests, identifies, and integrates the most effective techniques, principles, and training systems available today! Our MMA is based on continual learning, testing, and adaptation under conditions that provide the most beneficial environment for this process. This is a scientific process of discovering what works, and just as important, identifying what does NOT work. Most importantly, it becomes a personal process of selecting what works best for YOU!

For centuries, martial art warriors have sought and discovered methods of achieving extraordinary results in the areas of personal development & protection, and an understanding of how to deal with conflict in its many forms. Unfortunately, the martial arts have also accumulated a vast amount of unscientific principles, beliefs, and methods, when properly tested, are found to be in error.

The highest levels of advancement obviously require us to discard that which is outdated or erroneous, but that is only half of the process. We must also identify the latest "cutting edge" technologies that are available to us. However, a large portion of martial arts focus on "traditionalism", which is simply doing what has been done in the past. Traditionalism is counterproductive to continued advancement. We should learn from the past, so we can modify and improve it for the future!

Specific Scientific Principles

The following information is for those that want to investigate some of the scientific foundations of the Warrior's Cove MMA System. Like electricity or a vehicle, the student does not need to know all of the details of how it works in order to use it. Therefore, as a member of the Cove, you will not be required to know or study the following. That level of understanding is the responsibility of our Instructors. Read on if you wish, or simply skip to the more relevant portions of this website.

The Scientific Method

Our MMA system is intricately associated with the Scientific Method, which is simply a process of logical human inquiry. While the Scientific Method appears simple, its application is a complex challenge. That challenge is to discern what is true, and what is false, and ultimately, to achieve wisdom.

"There is one thing even more vital to science than intelligent methods;
and that is, the sincere desire to find out the truth, whatever it may be."
- Charles Sanders Pierce

"Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom."
- Thomas Jefferson

Recognizing that personal and cultural beliefs influence both our perceptions and our interpretations, the Scientific Method is designed to both acknowledge and minimize those influences when developing and testing a theory. Generally, the scientific method consists of the following steps:

1. Creation of a theory to explain something.

2. Performing tests properly designed to confirm if the theory (information) is accurate by several independent experimenters.

3. Acceptance, rejection, or adaptation of the theory (information) according to significant test results.

4. Acting according to the best information we have, with the understanding that new information may require further adaptation or even rejection of the theory in the future.

5. Understanding that the Scientific Method has limitations based on our own limited ability to conceive, perceive, and/or test in some areas. Therefore, we sometimes have to acknowledge that we simply "do not know". We then must have the courage to act (or not act) according to the fact that we do not know, rather than base our decisions and actions on pure assumption.

"To have doubted one's own first principles
is the mark of a civilized man."
- Oliver Wendell Holmes

"Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance." - Confucius

"An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know.
It's being able to differentiate between what you know and what you don't."
- Anatole France

In our MMA system, an accepted theory is called a principle after sufficient testing and confirmation.

Fitness Landscapes

The study of Fitness Landscapes deal with how species and systems evolve and adapt (with their limited time, energy, knowledge and skills) in relation to the specific demands and opportunities found in their environment. One important implication that is observed repeatedly, is that species and systems tend to get locked into a "local maximum". This means that anything dealing with survival, success, and adaptation will most likely gravitate toward the most immediate path that provides survival and success. However, many times the most immediate solutions are not the best ones. "Global maximums" refer to the overall most successful state that a species or system can achieve according their internal and environmental limitations. Global maximums can be transformed into a local maximum when a critical change occurs in the environment, or within the system (or species) itself. Optimum success strategies (searching for global maximums) must continually evaluate, explore and adapt to prevent stagnation on a local maximum (i.e. traditionalism, non-comprehensive training, or any path or system that limits our potential).

Our MMA system searches for global maximums in relation to personal defense and development, and also MMA competition. It also provides flexibility and freedom so its members can use it as a catalyst in achieving global maximums in accordance with their personal needs and goals.

Simple Emergent Programs

Simply put, we find that extraordinary and complex results can and will emerge from certain simple rules or conditions. The difficulty lies in finding the precise set of simple rules that will produce the results in question. The beauty of Simple Emergent Programs is simplifying that which is both complex and confusing by finding and focusing on the essential "simple rules" of that thing. Once we find and understand the simple rules or process at the foundation of something, we then have the ability to change or recreate it at a fundamental level without having to micromanage the numerous results. This allows us to intelligently influence a system that manifests itself with a level of complexity that is beyond our ability to manage superficially.

When creating or modifying a system, (like proper MMA training) this principle teaches us to set up precise simple rules so the resulting process becomes a self-organizing system that emerges naturally, with little further administration from us. Therefore, our MMA system is organized not only to teach students, but more importantly, to create an environment where students learn how to teach themselves! It produces leaders. It also creates an environment where the MMA system itself evolves and self-organizes according to the challenges and opportunities presented to us as a group.

You can also identify the Simple Emergent Programs in your own life, in order to produce the results you desire.

A great example of this principle is an actual computer program. Supercomputing legend, Danny Hillis, made a simple emergent program that created an environment (within his computer) which allowed a program to teach itself, and evolve accordingly. It almost succeeded in achieving the all time record in a standard test for ingenious programmers. The most interesting part of this, is that when Hillis examined his "evolved" program, he could not understand how it worked! It adapted beyond the point that Hillis could understand! Hillis stated, "I have carefully examined the instruction sequences, but I do not understand them. It may be that the program is not understandable." Remarkable, if you think about it. A method to guide growth and adaptation to a level of complexity beyond our intellectual abilities!

Modeling

The principle of modeling is simply how to observe the results of other individuals or systems, and copy (model) their methods to achieve the same results.  Members of our MMA group explore the fitness landscape and codify results within the system to reduce redundant efforts and maximize the ability of others to model and build upon previous results. Leaders act as a catalyst in the modeling process, pointing out what is most important to model for each individual, how and why.

Natural Adaptive Processes

In addition to Modeling, which is primarily a conscious process when applied to training, there are Natural Adaptive Processes that proceed, for the most part, beneath our awareness. These processes respond to demands or challenges that are experienced physically or mentally. By learning how to intelligently place specific demands on our bodies and minds, we can stimulate and guide this process toward desired results. We do not have to know all of the details, our bodies will take care of the details. Just like a vehicle, we can drive it without knowing exactly how it works.
