Mixed Martial Arts (Shinbudo) History

Although modern MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) training systems and techniques have evolved greatly, the concept and practice of Mixed Martial Arts is very old. During the late 1800's in Japan it was called Shinbudo. Translated as "essence of the warrior way" Shinbudo flourished in a period of refinement and change, incorporating new methods of training. There was a synthesis of different elements of the old disciplines that gave rise to numerous innovations and a high degree of originality unheard of previously. This was a natural evolution during a new era of peace in Japan when the various martial art masters could now share their knowledge with each other.

Eventually, use of the term Shinbudo faded over time. It was replaced with the shortened term, Budo, which is still used today to describe the various forms of Japanese martial disciplines. Unfortunately, the period of innovation was also replaced by a trend toward traditionalism once the new styles had been established. Many instructors encouraged their students to "train in only one style" and "don't change the style" even though what they were teaching originated from a synthesis of methods from various styles. In addition, with the new era of peace, the unforgiving heat of the Japanese battlefield ceased to forge the fighting skills, knowledge and discipline of the warriors. Realism in training began to fade.

The Warrior's Cove Mixed Martial Art program has been meticulously designed for over 25 years (long before MMA became popular in the United States) to restore the realism and evolution of MMA training. Warrior's Cove MMA continues to adapt and incorporate the latest "cutting edge" training methods that have proven most effective in combat (and competition), while at the same time preserving the unchanging aspects of the true Warrior.

The highest level Warriors have always understood that in addition to knowing how to survive and conquer others on the battlefield, they also needed to focus on ways of conquering oneself!  In battle (and daily life), one should not fight an opponent, while at the same time fighting inner battles such as fear, doubt, overconfidence and anger. Inner discipline is unfortunately missing in some modern day MMA competitors. We often see angry and arrogant attitudes, disrespect, and use of steroids in modern MMA. At the Warrior's Cove, we treat everyone with respect, we do not allow bad attitudes, and we dismiss any member that disregards teamwork, safety, and mutual respect in training. The true Warrior understands The Greatest Victory is to Conquer Oneself!
